5th of July 2015 notes

On Saturday the 21st of June we had our annual end-of-season day out. This year we went to Inch beach to test our surfing skills.

In fairness, our swimmers can’t be good at everything and sometimes taking part is more important than being talented and yes, perhaps it is true that more time was spent in the water rather than actually on it but, apart from these minor hiccups, a great day was had by all. Afterwards some serious amounts of burgers and chips were downed in Sam’s restaurant.

Thanks to all parents involved in the organisation of the day out and particularly to Denise who volunteered for “deck duty” in the sea!

Photos from the day can now be viewed on our Gallery page.

17th of May 2015 notes

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the grade “B” gala today in Tralee.  As this was the last “B” gala of the swimming season, swimmers from all clubs were at their peak of fitness.  Despite the stiff competition, Killarney swimmers excelled in all disciplines with medals, grade “A” times and Personal Bests aplenty.  Well done to all.

Under 11 girls – Well done to Pia Hickey who took the bronze medal in the 100 metres butterfly.
Under 11 boys – A wonderful performance by Ross O’Leary produced a silver in the 100 metres breaststroke.
Under 13 girls – Relying on her speed, Emir O’Dowd powered to a bronze in the 100 metres freestyle.
Under 13 boys – Congrats to Owen Fitzgerald who went for a “selection box” of medals, winning gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley, silver in the 100 metres butterfly and bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke.  Meanwhile, Paudie O’Leary continued to draw attention by winning a gold medal in one of the key races of the day, the 200 metres freestyle.  In the highly technical and closely watched 100 metres breaststroke, Charles O’Brien won a coveted gold for Killarney.
Under 15 girls – Particular praise on the day goes to Sarah O’Connor who not only won silver in the 100 metres freestyle, but also achieved her grade “A” times.  Well done, Sarah, and best of luck from everyone in those upcoming exams!  Well done also to Orlaith Reynolds who won bronze in the 100 metres butterfly, probably the most difficult swimming discipline.
Under 15 boys – Sean Farndon won a very fast bronze in the 100 metres freestyle.  Well done, Sean.
Over 16 girls – Some powerful swimming by our girls in this category produced a sackful of medals for the club.  Sinead Lucey won triple gold in the 200 metres freestyle, the 100 metres backstroke and the 100 metres butterfly while Janine O’Connor, in very relaxed style, won gold in the 100 metres freestyle, silver in the 200 metres freestyle and another silver in the 100 metres breaststroke.
Relays – There were two relay races on the day, both for ages 12 and under, both in the fastest race of all, the 200 metres freestyle.  The Killarney team of Paudie O’Leary, Charles O’Brien, Donal Daly and Ross O’Leary were not really tested and easily won the gold medal.  The girls race was an entirely different matter with some of the finest young swimmers in the south west from six different clubs competing for the honours.  However, it was clear from the start that this was a two horse race between the home club, Tralee, and Killarney.  Tralee, as to be expected, were good, showing great hunger and strength.  But Killarney were even better taking a glorious gold by little more than a fingernail!  Well done indeed to our team of Julie Rose Bowell, Leanne Kerins, Eva Quinn and Saibh O’Brien.
Thanks to our coaches, Kristian O’Donovan, Cathal O’Brien and Cathal Roche, who were fantastic on the day. Thanks also to all parents who travelled to Tralee, especially those who took part in the timekeeping.

10th of May 2015 notes

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the grade “C” gala earlier today in Askeaton. This was the last “C” gala of the current season and the last opportunity for some of our swimmers to shine – and shine they certainly did!  With medals galore, “B” qualification times in every category and Personal Best times all around, it was a magnificent display of just how far these young swimmers have progressed in one season.  Well done to all.
Under 11 girls – A great display by Clodagh Carroll who not only won her gold in the 50 metres breaststroke but also the silver medal in the 50 metres backstroke.
Under 11 boys – A powerful performance by Ethan O’Neill produced a gold in the 100 metres freestyle, gold in the 50 metres butterfly and yet another gold 100 metres Individual Medley.
Nathaniel Doncel also turned on the style winning a bronze medal in the 50 metres butterfly and also a bronze medal in the 100 metres Individual Medley.
Under 13 girls – Once again Imogen O’Connor dismissed the opposition with some very talented moves, seizing gold in the 100 metres freestyle and another gold in the 50 metres backstroke.
Particular praise goes to Elizabeth McGuire who not only achieved her “B” times, in this her first season in our club, but also took the gold medal in the 100 metres Individual Medley.
Just to show the strength of the club in this age group, Aisling White hoovered up the gold in the 50 metres breaststroke while Mairead Egan won the silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle.
Under 13 boys – In a display unlikely to be seen again this side of Rio, Paul O’Leary won a gold medal in the 100 metres freestyle, another gold in the 50 metres backstroke, yet another gold in the 100 metres Individual Medley and then a silver in the 50 metres breaststroke.  Nice one, Paul!
Under 15 girls – Courtney O’Sullivan went about her business very calmly on the day taking silver in the 100 metres Individual Medley and bronze medals in both the 100 metres freestyle and the 50 metres backstroke. Meanwhile, MaryClare McCarthy won a beautiful silver medal in the 50 metres freestyle.  Well done, MaryClare!
Under 15 boys – Connor Griffin looked very comfortable as he won gold in the 50 metres freestyle.
Thanks to our coaches, Kristian O’Donovan and Cathal O’Brien, who were giants of support on the day. Thanks also to all parents who travelled to Askeaton, especially those who took part in the timekeeping.

16th March 2015 notes

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Grade “B” gala in Askeaton on Sunday the 15th of March. There were noticeable and substantial improvements by our swimmers on their own “personal best” times for events and a fine haul of medals – all down to the hard work and commitment to training put in over the winter months.

Under 11 Girls – Well done to Pia Hickey and Saibh O’Brien in this age group. Pia won a silver medal in the 200 metres Individual Medley with Saibh taking the bronze. The girls swapped places on the podium for the 100 metres backstroke, with Saibh winning silver and Pia winning the bronze medal.

Under 13 Boys – Owen Fitzgerald had a great day out in this category winning a nice pair of silver medals in the 200 metres Individual Medley and the 100 metres backstroke. Meanwhile, Charles O’Brien won a fantastic bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke.

Under 15 Girls – Sarah O’Connor put in some powerful swimming in this highly competitive age group to take bronze in the 100 metres butterfly and bronze in the 200 metres freestyle.

Under 15 Boys – Some great displays by our swimmers in this group with John Daly taking a precious gold in the 100 metres butterfly and bronze in 200 metres freestyle while Michael Brosnan won an outstanding silver medal in the 100 metres butterfly.

Over 16 Girls – Congratulations to Sinead Lucey who won gold in the 200 metres freestyle, one of the toughest races in the gala. Congratulations also to Janine O’Connor who was unstoppable on the day, with a fantastic haul of medals, capturing gold in the 100 metres backstroke and a trio of silver medals in the 200 metres freestyle, the 200 metres Individual Medley and the 100 metres breaststroke.

Under 12 Relay Girls – Once again our relay teams were on fire with our 200 metres freestyle team of Ellen O’Connor, Cliona Murphy, Pia Hickey and Moya Noctor winning a very classy and promising bronze in the fastest of all relay competitions.

Never having competed in a 200 metres Medley Relay before, our coaches bravely entered Eva Quinn, Emer O’Dowd, Ellen Farndon and Julie Rose Bowell. There was no reason to worry. The girls electrified the pool, winning a silver medal for themselves and missing out on the gold by less than four hundredths of a second! Other clubs can only tremble for the future.

Thanks to our coaches, Kristian O’Donovan, Cathal O’Brien and Cathal Roche who gave wonderful support and encouragement to all our swimmers on the day.  Thanks also to all parents for travelling both in cars and on the bus and for taking part in the timekeeping.
